Install Linux Mint on VirtualBox | Tutorial

Install Linux Mint on VirtualBox is an easy process to do. You will probably want to test Mint before you install it as your main system. Installing it on VirtualBox is a good way to do it.

VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2.

First you need to install VirtualBox on your PC/Mac. Go to VirtualBox website. Download and install it. The install should be pretty straight forward on any OS.

After that, you will of course need a disk image for Linux mint to install Linux Mint on VirtualBox. Download it from the Linux Mint website.

First off, start your VirtualBox and select “New”.

After that, select a name and distribution. Choose “Linux” and “Ubuntu 64-bit”

Then select ram size. I would recommend 4096mb if you have at least 16GB ram on your host machine.

After selecting ram, click on “Create virtual hard disk now”. NOTE! The recommended size, is too low for Linux Mint installation, it should be at least 20GB.

Select VDI, if you’re not going to use this on other virtualization softwares, like VMWare.

Click on “Dynamically allocated” on the storage type, if you want to save space on your computers disk. Pick “Fixed size” if you want your virtual installation to be faster.

Now select the size and location for the disk. Remember to set it atleast 20GB!

After that, you have created the disk and environment for the virtual machine to work. Now go to VirtualBox start screen, select the Linux Mint installation and open settings.

Now go to “Storage” -> “IDE Controller” -> Click on the disk image, find your Mint .iso file. Select it and close the window by pressing OK.

Now, fire up your Virtual Machine. It should be working. If you can see “Automatic boot in … seconds, you’ve done everything correctly. If not, you should check all the steps that they are done correctly.

Click on “Install Linux Mint”.

Then select your language.

Select your keyboard layout.

Select if you want to install 3rd party software. None of these are mandatory for virtual machine installation, so I prefer not to install those.

Just select “Erase disk and install Linux Mint” on this next part.

Click on “Continue”.

This sets only the time, so choose any location that you like.

Set the user details you want. Password is mandatory on Debian based Linux distributions.

Now just wait for the installation to complete.

After it has been completed, just reboot your virtual machine.

Congratulations, the install is now done! Now you can start testing the Mint installation.
